College Crew scholarships to the USA are very popular around the world because as well as earning a world class degree it also provides student-athletes with a positive opportunity to develop both physically and mentally in a team environment over the course of four years. After high school graduation the next step is always extremely tough, so having this option to study, train, compete and develop is a fantastic pathway for those fortunate enough to be able to pursue it.
NCAA Division I requires colleges to enter two eight-oared shells and one four-oared shell in the team championship. The Championship is restricted to 12. Four other colleges are selected to enter a eight-oared shells tournament. The NCAA Division II Championship consists of a eight-oared shells and four-oared shell competition. The Division III Championship is a eight-oared competition only.
Crew scholarship opportunities vary considerably depending on each players athletic and academic ability, with the student-athletes that have the better rating/ranking/results (nationally and internationally) and have maintained higher academic grades receiving the larger tennis scholarship offers from college coaches. In womens college crew programs, there are 20 full athletic scholarships per team to spread out amongst its team, with amounts typically ranging from a full 100% to 25% in financial aid. Even though rowing is the oldest intercollegiate sport, the men have always chosen not to join the NCAA. Collegiate crews generally abide by NCAA rules, and they also have to abide by athletic conference rules, which mirror the NCAA rules. This makes mens crew ia club sport at college, however there can be athletic scholarship money available to student-athletes that are exceptional but the demand for these is high.
As well as the athletic scholarships that are available at colleges/universities if the student-athlete has good academic grades it may also be possible to receive an academic scholarship as well to help with the families financial commitment.
